THE NEWS

  • Administrators are determined to name the two proposed residential colleges after famous Yale affiliates, not donors, but University President Richard Levin said this has slowed fundraising for the project. Since the Yale Corporation endorsed plans for the new colleges in 2008, the University has raised only $145 million of the $500 million required for their construction, Vice President for Development Inge Reichenbach said. Both Reichenbach and Levin said reserving the naming rights has made it harder to attract lead donors for the colleges, but follows the precedent set by the other 12 colleges.
  • The voice of City Hall is about to speak with a different pitch. Today marks the end of Jessica Mayorga’s nearly four-year stint as Mayor John DeStefano Jr.’s communications chief. The second-longest serving spokesperson for New Haven’s longest serving mayor, she is heading home to her native Washington, D.C. to become marketing director for the Latino rights organization the National Council of La Raza. Adam Joseph, the city’s lobbyist at the state legislature in Hartford who is replacing Mayorga, starts work on Monday. While she will not miss “all those 4 a.m. phone calls,” Mayorga said she is leaving more than just a job, but a way of life — And a very demanding way of life, at that.
  • Within months, the Graduate School of Arts and Sciencescould see changes to the way it admits and funds its students. Graduate School Dean Thomas Pollard said he is currently analyzing how admissions, funding and mentoring work within the school’s separate graduate programs. He has already collected reports from directors of graduate studies comparing their departments to their national counterparts. Department leaders, who will meet with Pollard this month to discuss their findings, said they are keen to hear the dean’s ideas for the future of the Graduate School.
