THE NEWS

  • For the first time this year, applicants who stated an intent to major in engineering had to write an engineering essay in addition to completing the Common Application and the University’s supplement essay, Dean of Undergraduate Admissions Jeffrey Brenzel said in an e-mail Sunday. In addition to helping admissions officers better understand the students’ interest, Brenzel said the essay will help the University assess its recent efforts to promote its science and engineering offerings and continue its project of recruiting promising engineers.
  • Yale is more than 5,000 miles away from Cairo, where citizens are protesting Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak’s 30-year reign — but the impact of the unrest is felt at Yale, where professors are changing syllabi to teach about the conflict. All five political science professors interviewed said they are addressing the protests in their courses now and in the coming weeks. Some said that if Mubarak falls, they will have to change how they teach Middle East politics in the future.
  • A student liaison in each college will go over resumes, suggest internships and perform many of the same tasks as UCS counselors currently do. Yale College Council Treasurer and YCC-UCS Committee Chair Brandon Levin ’13 devised the program, to be unveiled Wednesday, in an effort to bring UCS’s under-utilized services closer to campus.
