The New Haven Firebird Society handed out over 100 turkeys with trimmings to needy residents between noon and 4 p.m. Monday.

Gary Tinney, who is president of the fraternal society for black firefighters, organized the yearly event. In addition handing out Turkeys from the firehouse on Goffe St., Tinney said his group ran a competition at the Edwards Street Elementary School, where students donated over 1000 canned goods to be distributed by the Firebird Society.

“Times are tough right now,” he said. “I know it’s not a lot, but it’s the least we can do to try and give those in need a happy holiday.”

Ward 24 Alderman Marcus Paca said he and his ward committee had knocked on doors in the past few days to advertise the event and give reassurance to those struggling financially that help would be available.

“We’ve taken a proactive approach,” Paca said. “We’ve gone out into the community and told those in need they’re not alone, and there are programs that can help them this holiday season.”
