Mandi Schwartz’s ’11 battle with leukemia has taken a turn for the worse. The women’s hockey forward is in the intensive care unit and not doing well, according to a Facebook event inviting the public to pray for Schwartz at noon on Friday.

Schwartz received a long-awaited stem cell transplant on Sep. 22 at the inpatient transplant unit of the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance, at the University of Washington Medical Center. In the aftermath of the potentially life-saving procedure, Mandi’s mother, Carol Schwartz, said her daughter had a white blood cell count of zero and no antibodies of her own — putting her at high risk for infection.

“We’ll kind of have to be prepared for anything,” Carol Schwartz said at the time. “We still have to worry about her not getting any infections or anything like that.”

Doctors first diagnosed Schwartz with acute myeloid leukemia in December 2008.
