Yonglu Che ’13 is in stable condition after being struck by a Yale Police Department vehicle on Winchester Avenue early this morning, Yale spokesman Tom Conroy said in an e-mail.

Che, 18, a Berkeley College student from Northville, Mich., sustained “severe injuries,” according to the Hartford Courant, and was taken to St. Raphael’s Hospital.

Conroy said Che was crossing Winchester Avenue, just north of the Grove Street Cemetery, around 1:30 a.m. at the time of the accident. The Courant reported that he got off a Yale shuttle bus near Webster Street, went behind the bus and then walked “into the path of the Yale cruiser,” according to police.

The Courant reported that Che is living on Winchester Avenue.

New Haven and state police were summoned to investigate the accident, Conroy said. According to the Courant, the driver of the police vehicle was identified as YPD Officer Willie Guilford.

Conroy said the University is in contact with Che’s family and “will be providing any and all support and assistance needed at this most difficult time.”
