I have a friend, we’ll call him Jimmy, who’s a Torrent hunter. He spends hours a day hunched over his MacBook, flannel sleeves rolled up to his elbows, and when he emerges, he does so with a thousand odd songs. Regardless of his ethics … he gets good music.
Jimmy got me into Los Campesinos!, who are my pick of the week. Their 2010 album “Romance Is Boring” is a little bit hit and a little bit miss. This is a band that generally does a great job of layering various samples, noise and instruments over their punchy back-beat tracks. But when it goes wrong here, it ain’t pretty.
THE GOOD.
“In Medias Res.” The intro is lovely. A song with a great intro can make up for a mediocre chorus, but “In Media Res” shines all the way through. From the first line, “Let’s talk about you for a minute” to the middle of the song’s instrumental breakdown to the conclusions somber return natural sounds and synth noise, the track has got a lot going on. But Los Campesinos! makes everything come together in a neatly disorganized composition.
“The Sea is a Good Place to Think of the Future.”
