The Society for Industrial-Organizational Psychologists filed a friend-of-the-court brief in the Ricci v. DeStefano case that the U.S. Supreme Court will hear April 22. In the case, one Hispanic and 19 white firefighters have sued the city for throwing out the results of a promotion exam because minority firefighters did poorly on the exam. The Society for Industrial-Organizational Psychologists supports the city’s argument that the test, which was created by hired consultants, was seriously flawed because the test’s content was not properly created and the score weighting was arbitrary. Twelve other organizations — including the NAACP, ACLU and the National League of Cities — have also filed briefs in support of the city.
