Twelve hours after Mayor John DeStefano Jr. announced plans to lay off 27 city employees Friday morning, those employees received their pink slips and were expected to clear out their desks by the end of the day. The layoffs primarily targeted the Department of Parks, Recreation and Trees, as well as the Livable City Initiative, the Corporation Council and the Department of Finance. Eighteen of the layoffs came from the Local 3114 Union. Local 3114 President Larry Amendola told the News Thursday night that the layoffs would be “the worst thing in the world” for the targeted city employees. “We’re very disappointed in the city, and we’re very disappointed in the mayor,” Amendola said.
