The Yale School of Architecture chose the five projects that will receive the inaugural grants from the $5 million endowment fund established by Gerald D. Hines, the founder and chairman of an international real estate firm called Hines, in 2008. These grants — unlike typical grants that focus on support for finite individual projects — plan to foster innovative proposals that will generate further research and development. The winning proposals will investigate constructional methods and materials, climate-responsible building and energy behaviors in buildings.
