The leader of Peruvian efforts to repatriate Inca artifacts housed at Yale said yesterday that his government, if it chooses to pursue legal action against the University, would file suit in a court in Cusco, Peru. The announcement, made by Jorge Villasante, the Peruvian minister of labor and employment promotion, is another indication that the terms of last September’s memorandum of understanding between the parties are no longer acceptable to the Government of Peru. The memorandum called for the United States District Court for the District of Connecticut to adjudicate all disputes between Yale and Peru; the question of which court in which country has jurisdiction over the objects excavated from Machu Picchu remains unclear. Yale officials declined to comment Wednesday night.
