Democratic State Representative George Wilber resigned from office Tuesday after The Register Citizen exposed the $100,000 he paid to silence a woman regarding a child sex abuse scandal. State Democratic leaders called for his resignation on Monday, though they had prior knowledge of the allegations and had determined that the matter did not warrant further action. Secretary of the State Susan Bysiewicz said the deadline to replace him on the ballot has passed, leaving his opponent, John Rigby, as the only candidate from a major party. Rigby said that he had no intention of using the allegations in his campaign.
