University President Richard Levin on Wednesday announced the formation of a search committee to recommend candidates to succeed Peter Salovey, who was named provost last week, as dean of Yale College. The nine-member committee planned to ask students and faculty in an e-mail message yesterday to submit nominations for the position. Levin said in an interview that he charged committee members when they met for the first time Tuesday with the task of preparing a short list of four to eight candidates for the deanship. The president said he hopes to name a successor to Salovey by Oct. 1, when the dean will move down the street to Warner House to succeed Provost Andrew Hamilton.
