A pair of Eli epeeists posted strong showings at the Junior Olympics, the United States Fencing Association’s under-20 championships that finished yesterday in Charlotte, NC.

Both Rebecca Moss ’10 and Matt Lee ’09 advanced past the initial round, which pitted fencers against six others in small pools to determine seedings for the ensuing bracket-format tournament.

Moss advanced to the round of 16, but lost there. Lee went 5-1 in his pool, then fell in the round of 32 out of a total field of 227.

The tournament provided a different environment for the pair, who have been competing in team events for most of the winter, and Lee said fatigue was a factor.

“I should’ve done better, but to be honest, the college season has been draining and I was a little tired today,” he said last night.
