Nevermind the more than six weeks of inaction. Both the men’s and women’s fencing teams cruised to easy victories against Vassar last night at Payne Whitney Gymnasium. The wins set the stage for the Ivy North Competition — which includes all of the Ancient Eight’s squads — on Feb. 3 in New Haven, a week after this weekend’s upcoming matches at NYU.

A trio of men’s fencers went 3-0 on the night, and the Elis triumphed 20-7. Foilists Andrew Holbrook ’10 and John Gurierri ’10 both went undefeated, highlighting a foil squad that went 8-1 against the Brewers, while Sebastian Cano-Besquet ’09 took all three of his bouts with the sabre. The win moves the Bulldogs to 4-2 on the season.

The women found equal success, winning 19-8. A pair of fencers, saberist Chloe Rossetti ’11 and foilest Lidia Gocheva ’10, took three bouts apiece. Rossetti and her fellow saberists, Farrah Kimovec ’10 and Erin Frey ’08, took seven of nine bouts from the Brewers to lead the Elis to their 3-2 record overall. The NYU men are 3-4, the women 3-5.
