The New Haven Police Department arrested a man at the corner of Edgewood Avenue and Howe Street on Monday night for possessing a pistol without carrying a gun permit, City Hall Spokeswoman Jessica Mayorga said.

Police were responding to a call warning them that an individual in the area was in possession of a gun and might commit a dangerous act, Mayorga said.

At 9:07 p.m., officers found the man eating in Pizza House, a restaurant near the intersection of Edgewood and Howe, she said.

Mayorga said the man owned a permit for his gun but had left it at home.

No violent acts were committed, no one was hurt and the individual with the gun was not arrested on any other charges.

The incident occurred one day before the city kicked off its second-annual gun-buyback program. For the length of the program — which runs Dec. 11-15 and 18-22 — Elm City residents will have the opportunity to trade in guns for $100 Wal-Mart gift certificates, no questions asked, at NHPD headquarters.
