To the Editor:
I write to commend Nick Baumann and the News’ coverage of Helen Resor ’09 and the Torino Winter Olympics. While some might have questioned the need for somebody to travel all the way to Italy to cover the event, Baumann’s humorous but informative stories and column served the Yale community well.
It is certainly possible to cover a game from afar (as shown by Baumann’s article on this weekend’s Yale women’s hockey games, “W. hockey is thrilling, even outside Turin,” 2/16), but it is impossible to capture the essence of the event without actually being in the stands. Indeed, I watched all of the U.S.A. women’s hockey games on television, but still found that Baumann’s coverage added to my experience and understanding, especially as a Yalie rooting for a fellow Yalie.
Opportunities such as these do not present themselves very often, but I hope that the News will consider reporting on location once again the next time it has the chance.
