After the departure of key players from last season’s men’s soccer team, all eyes were on midfielder Alex Munns ’07 to build on his 2004 Ivy Honorable Mention campaign and take control of a young Bulldogs squad. At first, things didn’t go as planned. Munns was sidelined for the first few weeks of the season with an injury he sustained in a summer Premier Developmental League and witnessed his Yale team sputter to an uninspiring 0-0-2 start. But Munns quickly made his presence felt, notching an assist in his first game back. The Des Moines native never looked back.

Munns scored point after point and accrued accolade after accolade, finishing with a team-best 17 points and seven goals. The second-leading scorer in the Ivies proved that he was not only talented but clutch as well. His two-goal performance against Cornell on Oct. 16, which earned him ECAC Player of the Week honors and a Soccer America Team of the Week selection, sparked Yale’s late-season push to win the Ivy title. By season’s end, Munns established himself as a premier star in the Ivy League, capping it off with a unanimous selection to the All-Ivy Team. Now he is the Male Athlete of the Fall.
