Yale women’s soccer player Hayley Zevenbergen ’09 was named Ivy League Rookie of the Week yesterday.

The freshman from Woodway, Wash. played a critical role at midfield against nationally-ranked Duke University and the University of North Carolina last weekend, keeping the teams off-balance and allowing the Bulldogs (1-2-0) to stick around to the bitter end in two tough 1-0 losses at the Carolina Soccer Classic in Chapel Hill. Duke and UNC had outscored their opponents 23-7 in seven games before running into Yale.

Zevenbergen is no stranger to accolades, garnering all-league, all-area and team MVP honors while at Edmonds Woodway High School. She also was a member of the state championship basketball team and the track team.

Zevenbergen’s teammate, forward Jamie Ortega ’06, admits that she does not know the freshman that well, but is certain that the midfielder has been an asset to the team.

“I think she’s doing an awesome job,” Ortega said, “I wasn’t exactly sure how the starting lineup was going to work out, and she proved herself. She definitely deserves what she got.”
