New Haven police have charged a man in a hit-and-run accident that injured a 61-year-old Hamden woman Monday.

Osbaldo Mesa, 31, of West Haven was charged with evading responsibility, tampering with evidence, interfering with a police investigation, and failure to have car insurance.

The woman was hit by a sport utility vehicle shortly before 10 a.m. as she crossed Grove Street, apparently against the green light, police said. She was treated for a head injury and other wounds at the Hospital of St. Raphael and released, police said.

Witnesses reported seeing the SUV speed away after hitting the woman.

Police then pieced together witnesses’ statements and obtained a partial license plate number, which led to Mesa’s arrest.

Police said Monday evening that they had not yet set bond for Mesa. He was expected to be arraigned Tuesday in New Haven Superior Court.
