New Haven police arrested a man Monday in connection with several taxi cab robberies in the city.

Police said Gilberto Rentas, 17, of Hotchkiss Street, was responsible for four robberies of Metro Taxi cabs in the last two months, most recently on Oct. 29.

Rentas allegedly demanded money from cab drivers, displaying a knife on three occasions and a gun on the other. On Sept. 17, a victim sustained a laceration to his hand while attempting to grab the knife Rentas allegedly held.

Officers arrested Rentas in the area of East and Water streets Monday morning after an investigation by the department’s Robbery/Burglary Unit. He was charged with four counts of first-degree robbery, four counts of second-degree larceny, third-degree assault and several other minor counts.

Rentas was also arrested on an unrelated outstanding warrant for failure to appear in the second-degree, possession of a controlled substance and disorderly conduct.
