Yale police arrested a suspect Sunday night in connection with a series of recent thefts from student rooms.

Officers arrested Jose Rivera, 26, of New Haven, and charged him with nine counts of burglary and larceny, Yale Police Chief James Perrotti said.

Police recovered five laptops and a digital camera after Rivera was picked up in the downtown area by a special Yale Police Department detachment, Perrotti said.

Because he was young and wore a backpack — making him look like a student — Rivera was able to gain access to the residential colleges relatively easily, Perrotti said.

The backpack was also stolen, he said.

“This is a real wake-up call for students,” Perrotti said. “He could be in and out in 30 seconds.”

Perrotti advised students to keep their doors locked and not to leave their rooms unattended.
