Police and state officials have concluded that a white powder tossed out on the street in Newtown over the weekend was baking flour.

Police Chief Michael Kehoe said Monday that hikers often mark their trail with flour.

A woman with reddish hair was spotted about 10:30 a.m. on Saturday tossing a white powder from her blue-and-black bag, leaving 4-inch circles of powder at 100- to 1,500-foot intervals on Queen Street.

Powder was also found at Fairfield Hills, behind the Middle School, and behind St. Rose church.

The Department of Environmental Protection collected samples of the powder and confirmed Monday that testing showed it was flour.
