A state trooper who crashed his cruiser in New Haven early Monday morning died in the hospital later in the day.

The officer, 29-year-old David Anderson, was off-duty when the crash occurred on State Street at about 1:30 a.m., critically injuring him but leaving his two passengers nearly unscathed.

Anderson was driving south on State near Pearl Street when he lost control of his vehicle, colliding into a traffic stanchion, a tree and a parked car, New Haven Police spokeswoman Judith Mongillo said.

The car flipped over during the course of the incident before landing on its wheels again, she added.

Further details were not available.

“It’s been less than 24 hours,” Mongillo said. “We haven’t determined as of yet the cause of the accident.”

Anderson sustained “very serious” injuries from which he died early Monday afternoon at Yale-New Haven Hospital. The two passengers were not seriously hurt.

Cantrece Adams, 27, of New Haven went to Yale-New Haven to be checked out, while Gardner Lewis, 27, of Hamden sought minor medical attention on his own, Mongillo said.
