Two Bulldog freshmen received Ivy League honors for their excellent performances last week.

Softball pitcher Shayna Filson ’04 earned Ivy League rookie of the week honors for her performances on the mound and at the plate in five games. Women’s lacrosse midfielder Sophie Melniker ’04 earned the Ivy League offensive player of the week award with her outstanding offensive outings last week.

Filson batted .467 and had 11 RBIs in five games last week, and the freshman homered in four consecutive outings. Her season total of four home runs ties Yale’s single-season record.

The California native also notched a win and a save for the Bulldogs (12-13) in two appearances last week.

Melniker had a sensational week for the No. 8 Bulldogs (8-0, 3-0 Ivy) in their wins over Harvard and Fairfield.

The freshman gave the Elis a big boost in their 10-9 win over the Crimson on Sunday. The New York native chipped in three goals and an assist. She also had five goals and an assist in Yale’s 15-8 defeat of Fairfield.

Melniker added one goal in Yale’s 15-4 win over Holy Cross yesterday.

The rookie midfielder broke out of her shell in the absence of fellow freshman midfielder Miles Whitman ’04, who sat out last week with an ankle sprain. Whitman has 23 goals and two assists on the season, and she won the offensive player of the week award for the week of March 19.
