Although I can’t hear them over the sound of my chattering teeth, seasoned New Haven-ites insist that the weather hasn’t even begun to turn cold. So, in the spirit of warmth and style, I’ve created an easy-to-follow purchasing guide for all the gear you’ll need this winter.

First, everyone needs a down jacket. And you can get over your fear of looking like a marshmallow; Penfield’s Quilted Zipfront Jacket ($195) and Patagonia’s Micro Puff Hooded Jacket ($225) don’t sacrifice style for warmth or budget. Rule of thumb: To avoid the marshmallow effect, choose quilted down jackets with narrower down-filled segments.

The majority of Yale students own a peacoat. Change things up with a nautical-inspired toggle coat, like this one from Company of We ($325).

Finally, for those times when you just need to look classy, a topcoat is absolutely necessary. Although it costs nearly the equivalent of Yale’s tuition, Band of Outsiders’ Polo Coat ($2070) is a perfect example. Or, no less bespoke and significantly better priced, is United Colors of Benetton’s Single Breasted Tweed Topcoat ($269). Wear it over a suit and with a scarf: The epitome of fashion and warmth.
