As part of the University’s ongoing efforts to reach out to the West Haven community since the creation of West Campus in 2007, Yale announced Tuesday that it will invest $100,000 in West Haven public schools.

The money brings Yale’s total recent investments in West Haven to more than $1 million, and this newest addition will go toward reading and educational materials — including computer and Smart Board software — for elementary schools.

“[Yale administrators] have been very generous to us,” West Haven Public Schools Superintendent Neil Cavallaro told the News. “When they purchased West Campus they made it clear that they wanted to be a part of our community. We hope it continues for a long, long time.”

Literacy resources are needed in West Haven schools to help close the achievement gap, Cavallaro said. These resources will focus on young elementary school students to make sure every student is performing on their appropriate reading level as soon as possible, he added.

Yale’s West Campus is located seven miles from downtown New Haven.
