  1. ‘Night Rainbow’ shines over Elm City

The rainbow soaring across the New Haven sky Wednesday evening was not celebrating the imminent legalization of same-sex marriage in Rhode Island: Instead, “Global Rainbow New Haven” — a project that features a laser light sculpture projecting the full spectrum of the rainbow — marks the beginning of New Haven’s 375th anniversary celebration.

The lasers will light up the Elm City sky every evening from dusk until 1 a.m. through Saturday. The beam, which originates from the summit of East Rock, bisect Silliman and Timothy Dwight, cross the  New Haven Green and can be seen for 35 miles over the Long Island Sound.

The sculpture was first created by artist Yvette Mattern in 2009 for a Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebration in New York City, and has since toured as far as Germany and France.
