Former U.S. Special Envoy to Afghanistan and Pakistan Marc Grossman will be coming to Yale as a senior fellow with the Jackson Institute of Global Affairs.

According to a Thursday email announcing Grossman’s appointment, the former ambassador will come to Yale three times this semester to interact with students and will teach a course through the Jackson Institute next fall.

“Marc Grossman is an outstanding diplomat and one of the very best that the U.S. foreign service has to offer,” said former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger in Thursday’s announcement. “It is wonderful that Ambassador Grossman will teach at Yale following his distinguished career in service to the United States.”

Grossman’s long diplomatic career includes service as the U.S. ambassador to Turkey, the deputy director to the office of the NATO secretary-general, and undersecretary of state for political affairs. In 2011, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton appointed Grossman as special envoy to Afghanistan and Pakistan, a capacity in which he shaped American diplomatic, military and economic policy in these two countries. Grossman currently serves as vice chairman of the Cohen Group, a global business consulting firm headed by former Secretary of Defense William Cohen.

The Jackson Institute’s senior fellows program brings practitioners and experts in the field of global affairs to the University to teach courses, advise students and contribute to campus conversation. Current senior fellows include New York Times columnist David Brooks, former ambassador to Afghanistan, Ryan Crocker, and former commander of the U.S. forces in Afghanistan, Stanley McChrystal.
