  1. Levin names new Divinity School dean

In a Thursday morning email to the Divinity School community, University President Richard Levin announced that Gregory Sterling will be the school’s next dean.

Sterling, who will take office August 1, has served as dean of the Graduate School of the University of Notre Dame since 2008. Levin wrote that applications to Notre Dame’s graduate school increased dramatically during Sterling’s tenure, adding that Sterling oversaw the formation of a professional development program at the school. Sterling’s academic work focuses on the maintenance of Jewish and Christian identity within the larger Greco-Roman culture, and he specializes in Hellenistic Judaism, according to Levin’s email.

The email thanked Harold Attridge, the current dean, for the 10 years he spent leading the Divinity School, adding that Attridge’s tenure brought the school to new prominence “both in its field and within the University.”

“He has been a steady hand at the tiller, a complete master of the school’s finances, and a leader in shaping and recruiting its exceptional faculty,” Levin wrote. “Harry and Jan [Attridge’s wife] have been a constant and welcoming presence on the campus, and we look forward to their return after they enjoy a well-deserved leave of absence next year.”

Levin and Attridge will make a formal announcement at 2 p.m. today in the Divinity School common room.

  2. History grad students get new study space in HGS

Around 25 students, faculty and administrators celebrated the opening of a new study space for history graduate students Wednesday.

The space — a suite of three former dorm rooms on the second floor of the Hall of Graduate Studies — is now available for graduate students in the History Department to study, meet with undergraduates and socialize, Graduate School Dean Thomas Pollard said. This comes as the Graduate School is making efforts to find more study spaces for its students, particularly in humanities departments that do not have space for students to meet and work.

The Graduate School obtained the space by swapping a suite of rooms designated for the dean in the HGS tower for the second-floor dorm rooms, Pollard said. The rooms were “spruced up,” furnished and outfitted with a card key that will permit history students to access them. They are located up one flight of stairs from the HGS dining hall.

Earlier this year, one room in Linsly-Chittenden Hall was identified for use by English graduate students, and the English Department has opened its faculty library to its graduate students, Pollard said.

  3. SOM faculty re-approve joint J.D./M.B.A.

The School of Management faculty voted Monday to re-approve the accelerated J.D./M.B.A. joint-degree, offered in conjunction with the Law School.

Andrea McClure, SOM Faculty Recruiting Coordinator, said the faculty voted unanimously to continue offering the joint degree as a permanent program.

Yale’s accelerated J.D./M.B.A. is one of the shortest programs of its kind nationwide. Students pursuing the joint-degree can graduate in six semesters and are not required to pursue summer coursework. Law school faculty voted Oct. 21 to re-approve the program.

Students who pursue the joint-degree begin as law students, spending two years at the Law School and one at SOM.

  4. Law schools see decline in applications

The American Bar Association Journal reported last week that, as of Jan. 13, law schools had received roughly 15 percent fewer applications than at the same time last year.

The ABA Journal cited a thin job market as the cause for the lower numbers, though it quoted Wendy Margolis, a spokeswoman for the Law School Admission Council, saying that the numbers could fluctuate before the admissions cycle is over.

“The caveat is that we are very early in the cycle,” Margolis said in the article. “So these numbers change considerably.”

Yale Law School Spokeswoman Janet Conroy declined to state the number of applications received at Yale Law until the application deadline passes. Applications to Yale Law School are due Feb. 15.
