Yale football defensive back Spencer Rymiszewski ’17 — who was sent to the hospital with a serious upper body injury suffered during Yale’s game against Penn on Saturday — announced today that he will miss the Elis’ remaining four games with a spinal cord concussion. He added, however, that he expects to make a full recovery.

The sophomore dove to help linebacker Darius Manora ’17 on a tackle late in the second quarter when he took a hit to the helmet, emerging from the fray motionless on the ground. Rymiszewski was then put on a stretcher during a long injury timeout to be sent to Yale-New Haven Hospital. No updates on his condition were available until today.

Rymiszewski leads the Elis with two interceptions and is second on the squad with 38 tackles. On Tuesday, he released the following statement to thank those supporting him:

“During Satuday’s game against Penn, I suffered a spinal cord concussion that will have me sidelined for the rest of the season.  I anticipate making a full recovery and getting back on the football field with my brothers. I am grateful to the Yale medical staff and the entire Yale football community — to include the administrative staff, my coaches, my teammates, and all of the parents — for their care, kindness, love, and support over the last days.”

After the 2013 season, Rymiszewski won the team’s Charles Loftus award as its most valuable freshman.
