Yale College students will not receive credit or funding for travel to Guinea, Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Nigeria, the four countries most affected by the Ebola epidemic, according to a Tuesday afternoon email sent by Provost Ben Polak and Director of Yale Health Paul Genecin. Student groups will also no longer be permitted to travel to these countries.

“The Ebola outbreak has been devastating to people living in affected areas and continues to be a major public health threat around the globe,” the email read.

If Yale students do find themselves having to travel to these countries, they must register with the Yale international travel website prior to leaving the University, the email stated. Before coming back to Yale, they will have to check in with the Yale Health Inpatient Unit.

The announcement comes slightly over a month after the World Health Organization declared an international public health emergency. As of September 6, 2014, nearly 2,300 deaths had been reported.
