Officials are investigating the cause of a fatal fire that took place at University Towers early Wednesday morning.

The first alarm was reported at 4:32 a.m, and over twenty firefighters reached the seventeen-story high-rise by 4:36 a.m , said Assistant Chief of  Operations Ralph Black. He said that the blaze took the life of one and injured four people – two residents and two firefighters.

The victim was identified as Charlton Gilbert – who lived in apartment 6P where the fire started. A representative from the office of the State Medical Examiner said that the cause of death was ruled smoke inhalation and  classified as accidental.

Black said that two residents were taken to the hospital for respiratory issues and two firefighters were also hospitalized – one for an ankle injury and one for chest pains. Black said all four individuals were released from the hospital on Wednesday night.

Black said he was not aware of any fire code violations at University Towers and that the fire department’s investigative unit is still looking into the cause of the incident.

University Towers managers could not be reached for comment on Wednesday or Thursday.
