At the conclusion of the fall semester, eight juniors and 60 seniors were inducted into Yale’s chapter of the Phi Beta Kappa honor society.

The national bylaws of Phi Beta Kappa permit each chapter to elect no more than 10 percent of every graduating class to the society; otherwise, each chapter may set its own admissions criteria and academic standards. At Yale, admission to Phi Beta Kappa is determined by the percentage of straight-A grades in a transcript. A mark of CR for a course taken CR/D/Fail counts as a non-A grade in the calculations.

Yale elects students to the society in three elections between junior fall, senior fall and Commencement. The 60 seniors inducted this fall join 13 of their classmates who were elected to the society last fall, as juniors.

Phi Beta Kappa was founded in 1776 at the College of William and Mary. Since then, about 10 percent of the nation’s colleges and universities have formed chapters. As 10 percent of graduates at these institutions are inducted, roughly one out of 100 college graduates in the Unites States is a member of Phi Beta Kappa.
