After discovering $98,000 cash in a desk he purchased on Craigslist, New Haven resident Noah Muroff decided to call the original owners and return the money according to the Hartford Courant.

The money was stuffed in a bag behind a drawer of the desk, which Muroff originally purchased for $150. The desk’s owner alleged the money was her inheritance and she had hidden it in the desk but forgot where it was.

“I do not think there are too many people in this world who would have done what you did,” the owner wrote in a thank you note to Muroff. “I will be forever grateful.”

The story has garnered attention on message boards and news outlets, amidst anti-semitic jokes and cries that Muroff should have kept the money. Bloggers have suspected the money came from a political bribe or a drug deal.

“I still can’t figure out how you misplace that amount of money- Or why she had it bundled in $100 bills stuffed in an old crappy desk,” wrote CT Boom blogger Anna Zap.
