Ericka Saracho ’14 was arrested yesterday during an immigration rally of over 15,000 people in Washington, D.C. Eight Democratic members of Congress — including Rep. Raul Grijalva of Arizona — and approximately 200 others were a part of the act of civil disobedience on the National Mall that resulted in their arrest for blocking streets near the Capitol, according to the ABC News blog “The Note.”

The rally, entitled “Camino Americano Rally and March for Immigrant Dignity and Respect,” intended to encourage the House, specifically Speaker John Boehner and House Republicans, to vote on immigration reform. The arrested individuals, including Saracho and the members of Congress, will be charged with “crowding, obstructing and incommoding,” according to the U.S. Capitol Police in The Note’s blog post.

Saracho, a senior in Ezra Stiles College, is an Ethnicity, Race and Migration major. Over the summer, she served on the staff of the Ulysses S. Grant Foundation, teaching Humanities to New Haven sixth graders and was a FOOT Leader for incoming freshmen. During the year, she tutors at Wexler-Grant Elementary School and plays on the rugby team.
