Garth Harries named new NHPS superintendent
The vote is in and the new superintendent of New Haven Public Schools is Garth Harries ’95.
Harries, the current deputy superintendent, was selected after a unanimous vote by the New Haven School Board. His pick comes as no surprise to those in the Elm City: While working in New Haven, Harries led the School Change Initiative, a new teacher evaluation system and a school tiering system.
In a phone interview with the News, Harries said he was thrilled to get the job and eager to start the position.
“It felt great,” Harries said about the appointment, “It’s awe-inspiring in both a wonderful and intimidating sense.”
Later in the week, Harries will discuss his vision for the future of the school district in more detail. For now, he only said that New Haven is headed in the right direction but needs to go “deeper and stronger toward the goal.”
There will be a meeting later this week where Harries will discuss his vision for the future of New Haven Public Schools, said NHPS spokeswoman Abbe Smith.
