THE NEWS

  • Amid the state’s fiscal crisis and advocacy groups’ cries for education reform, Connecticut Gov. Dannel Malloy announced a $152 million increase in state aid to Connecticut public schools at a Tuesday press conference. The money, which will come in the form of Education Cost Sharing grants, will bolster teaching programs in New Haven and 29 other underperforming alliance districts, with smaller funding increases for other municipalities. Malloy’s announcement preceded today’s unveiling of his proposal for the state’s next two-year budget that will address over $2 billion in projected deficits, according to the Office of Fiscal Analysis.
  • After the University banned freshman fall rush, fraternity leaders said they are seeing significantly larger spring rush classes this year compared to previous years. Three of five fraternity leaders interviewed said their spring rush classes had substantially increased or doubled compared to previous years’ classes, and two fraternities will increase the number of bids they plan to give out this spring in response to larger rush classes.
  • While many singers and musicians from around the world dream of winning their first Grammy Award this Sunday, internationally renowned pianist Emanuel Ax has already reached such an achievement. Ax, who has won seven Grammy Awards, will perform a recital in Sprague Hall tonight as part of the Yale School of Music’s Horowitz Piano Series.
