THE NEWS

  • In an effort to help strengthen Hindu programming on campus, Asha Shipman joined the Chaplain’s Office staff on Jan. 16 as the new Hindu life advisor. The new 20-hour per week part-time position was created to support the increasing popularity of Hindu programs on campus, according to University Chaplain Sharon Kugler. Shipman’s main role will be to advise the Hindu Students Council, which has significantly expanded its presence on campus since its founding in 2005.
  • Yale-NUS has created four faculty search committees for its second round of faculty recruitment and is looking to hire professors in the humanities, social sciences, sciences and environmental studies, according to Charles Bailyn, dean of faculty at Yale-NUS. Yale-NUS hired 38 professors in 2012 and hopes eventually to build a faculty of 100 professors.
  • Starting this year, the History of Science, History of Medicine major will be offered under a new name and with a different set of graduation requirements. The major will be renamed to History of Science, Medicine and Public Health, and will require students to choose one of five programs of study called “pathways.” The reformed major will also feature a one-term alternative to the previous yearlong senior essay requirement.
