- Over 500 staff members packed into the pews of Battell Chapel yesterday morning for a town hall convened by President-elect Peter Salovey, who opened the meeting by discussing his four goals — to create a more unified, innovative, accessible and excellent Yale — that he first outlined when he was announced as Yale’s next president. During the town hall, Salovey said he hopes to make the staff feel integrated with other parts of the University, continue to improve the University’s relationship with local merchants and create opportunities for upward mobility for current staff members.
New Haven Public Schools Superintendent Reginald Mayo will retire as early as this June, an upper-level city official told the News this afternoon. The revelation coincides with Mayor John DeStefano Jr.’s announcement that he will not seek re-election this fall after two decades in office, the longest mayoral tenure in the city’s history.
- Fifty years ago, the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library opened to mixed reviews: Some felt that the building was out of touch with Yale’s famous Gothic architecture, and others felt the architecture was groundbreaking. At a talk last week honoring the Beinecke’s 50th anniversary, Architecture School Dean Robert A.M. Stern ARC ’65 described the Beinecke as “the jewel in the University’s new crown of modernity.” But though the library has become integral to Yale’s campus, librarians interviewed said there are concerns that the building is not equipped to deal with the library’s growing collection and existing goals of increasing accessibility to its resources.
