THE NEWS

  • In the midst of uncertainty about the future of Yale’s Educational Studies Program, Yale College Dean Mary Miller has appointed Elizabeth Carroll to teach the program’s core course offerings next semester. Carroll, currently a Ph.D. candidate at Harvard’s Graduate School of Education, will continue teaching the educational studies classes formerly taught by the program’s director, Linda Cole-Taylor, who resigned earlier this year. Though Miller said administrators plan to maintain the program, Carroll will not serve as director and is only slated to teach next semester’s classes while the Faculty Advisory Committee on Educational Studies searches for a new director.
  • A group of Yale students made up mostly of members of the Yale Student Environmental Coalition (YSEC) and the think tank Yale Roosevelt Institute are compiling a report to encourage the University to divest from fossil fuels. Yale currently invests 7 percent of its $19.3 billion endowment, the second highest in higher education, in natural resources, which include fossil fuels and other resources. Students involved in the divestment campaign said they hope to collaborate with the Yale administration to determine the best way forward, but economists and finance experts interviewed said they were skeptical about whether divesting from fossil fuels would be a wise move.
  • Chicago-based Clover Wireless announced yesterday its acquisition of YouRenew, a New Haven-based company that was started by Yale graduates in 2008. Both companies offer services that allow individuals and businesses to trade in their obsolete wireless electronics such as smartphones, tablets and laptops. The acquisition will improve Clover Wireless’ services by integrating YouRenew’s new online platform, which ensures data security and environmental compliance.
