THE NEWS

  • As the college admissions cycle kicks off for the class of 2017, most American universities have actually remained fairly noncompetitive despite the hype of ever-decreasing admissions rates. The vast majority of American public and private universities have only become modestly more selective in the last 10 years, with the average acceptance rate hovering steadily around 60 to 70 percent, according to a recent study by the National Association for College Admission Counseling.
  • Larry Alexander ’72, a Massachusetts state representative who dedicated his political career to improving public service, passed away due to complications relating to a blood disorder in Boston on Nov. 6. He was 62. Alexander graduated from Yale with an honors degree in political science and led a distinguished career in law and politics. He served in Massachusetts state politics for over a decade before returning to Yale as a lecturer in 2008, leading a college seminar entitled “Ethical Dilemmas of Legislators.”
  • Former United Kingdom Prime Minister Tony Blair and Mexican President Ernesto Zedillo delivered a talk called “Global Crisis: The Way Forward” in front of a tightly packed audience that filled Battell Chapel on Monday.
