THE NEWS

  • Students have expressed confusion and frustration in response to hearing that Silliman College’s Safety Dance will not continue after 13 years.After students received a warning in a Friday email that Silliman College Master Judith Krauss was considering ending future Safety Dances, dance organizers Hannah Fornero ’15 and Nicole de Santis ’15 told the News on Monday night that this year’s Safety Dance was its last. The dance’s cancellation met significant resistance among students who claim it will not change alcohol culture at Yale. But Krauss said she decided to cancel the dance because the risks associated with excessive alcohol use at the dance ultimately outweighed the dance’s benefits.
  • At the semester’s first meeting of the History Undergraduate Advisory Council Monday afternoon recruitment efforts took centerstage: students and Steven Pincus, director of undergraduate studies in history, discussed creating targeted outreach events for freshmen and sophomores in order to bolster enrollment in a major whose popularity has declined in recent years.
  • With just over a month before Election Day, U.S. Senate candidates Chris Murphy and Linda McMahon have recently focused their attention on two hot-button issues: Social Security and Medicare. the candidates have shifted their energy from criticizing the opponent’s personal finances in favor of directing a greater focus toward arguing policies that primarily affect the elderly.
