THE NEWS

  • Just over one year ago, Yale faced a bold accusation. According to 16 students and alumni who filed a Title IX complaint with the Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights (OCR), the University, widely acclaimed for its academic excellence, fostered a hostile sexual environment. So what’s changed since then? Caroline Tan takes an close look.
  • Three New Haven Police Department officers were arrested Friday for their involvement in an off-duty shooting incident outside the State Street bar Christopher Martin’s last Sunday. The NHPD secured arrest warrants from the State’s Attorney’s office Thursday evening for the three officers, who voluntarily turned themselves in at police headquarters on Union Avenue Friday morning, according to NHPD spokesman David Hartman.
  • Thursday’s faculty resolution criticizing Singapore’s “history of lack of respect for civil and political rights” may not have a major effect on the Yale-NUS project. Three NUS administrators said they were disappointed to see the resolution passed and University President Richard Levin said he did not support the resolution because it had a “sense of moral superiority.” But according to several Singaporean citizens, NUS professors and NUS administrators interviewed, discussions on Singapore’s restrictions on free speech, the press and protest are common, so it’s unlikely the resolution will lead to major changes within the Yale-NUS project.
