THE NEWS

  • The Farmington Canal Trail, an approximately 84-mile path between the waterfront in New Haven and Northampton, Mass., will soon provide Yale students with another transportation option. Though New Haven and neighboring communities have been converting the Farmington Canal Railroad into a walking, jogging and biking trail for over a decade, architects are only now turning their attention to the portion that runs through Yale’s campus. On Tuesday, October 25, architect Dean Sakamoto ARC ‘98 presented his final conceptual design for this portion of the path at a New Haven public meeting.
  • The number of students applying for fellowships through the Global Health Initiative has risen substantially in recent years, and program administrators are hoping to find additional funding to expand student participation. Kaveh Khoshnood, director of the Global Health Initiative, said he expects to receive over 100 applications for the program this year, which has traditionally awarded about 20 fellowships annually. The program offered $70,000 to 17 students for research projects or internships last summer, but Khoshnood said he would like to provide at least $100,000 in coming years.
  • Saturday’s snowstorm was the most costly of these weather-related disasters. Though the storm did not hit New Haven nearly as hard as other cities in Connecticut, city and state officials said New Haven may receive funding from the Federal Emergency Management Agency for its restoration efforts.
