THE NEWS

  • Can classical music be pop(ular) music? Andrew Kahn and Natasha Thondavadi find young composers ready to embrace the masses in tomorrow’s WEEKEND cover.
  • To protect its citizens, the US government must turn its attention to threats that may come from outside the United States, according to Janet Napolitano, US secretary of homeland security. Napolitano spoke to a crowd of about 200 undergraduates and other members of the Yale community in Levinson Auditorium Thursday afternoon about how the US can keep its citizens safe. She emphasized in her talk that government leaders must collaborate with other nations to strengthen homeland security in the United States.
  • Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dean Thomas Pollard said that he plans to expand the numbers of postdoctoral fellowships and internships available to graduate students by reaching out to peer institutions and Yale alumni, thereby increasing employment opportunities. He also would like to introduce a career development plan to doctoral programs, linking students to extracurricular opportunities and activities offered by the Career Services office, and expanding departmental activities such as mock interviews and alumni referrals.
