THE NEWS

  • The new mugs that students found in dining halls this fall may have become a bit too popular.

Yale Dining expects to lose about 25 percent of its china each year, Director of Residential Dining Geraldine Remer said in an email to the News, but over 75 percent of mugs have already disappeared this year in some residential colleges. Remer said the size of the new mugs makes them “more versatile,” but their rapid disappearance has led some dining hall desk attendants to monitor students more strictly.

  • Four New Haven restaurants flunked recent health inspections and another five were on the edge of failure.

Routine inspections of 25 local eateries by the New Haven Environmental Health Department between Sept. 12-16 revealed deficient sanitation and safety standards including at least two cases of rodents and several insect infestations. Six proprietors whose establishments were inspected said they appreciated the vigilance and had customers who paid notice to the ratings of various restaurants. Several customers leaving one of the failing restaurants, however, said they were not aware of the inspections.

  • A message from Chief Ronnell A. Higgins: “welcome to Your Police Department.” The annual Citizen’s Police Academy for the Yale Police Department began Tuesday as 29 citizens from the Yale and New Haven community entered the YPD headquarters on Ashmun St. The free program, whose participants range from Yale graduate students to Yale University workers, will take place weekly until Nov. 8. The program involves both classroom and hands-on activities, and intends to “raise awareness and promote an understanding of the types of service the police department provides at Yale,” according to YPD Assistant Chief Steven Woznyk.
