Mark your iCal: Apple will launch its latest phone, the iPhone 4S on Oct. 14.

The line of shoppers that greeted the Sept. 24 opening of the New Haven Apple Store, snaking all the way to Tower Parkway, may repeat itself next Friday as the store prepares to retail the new phone, which the technology company announced in Cuptertino, Calif., earlier today. The iPhone 4S features a more powerful processor, an upgraded eight-megapixel camera and a voice-enabled assistant application, among other new features, and will start at $199 for a 16GB model on contract.

“I’m sure it’ll be another hit,” said one Apple Store employee, who was not authorized to make comment. “Everyone already loved the iPhone [4] and I’m sure this [new model] will bring out customers.”

Customers can begin pre-ordering the device Friday, according to the Apple website. The company also updated its line-up of iPods: the iPod Touch now retails at $199 for the 8GB model, down from $229, while the iPod Nano’s interface was updated and now sells at $129 for the 8GB model, a $20 drop from its previous price.

One New Haven resident interviewed in the Apple Store, Barry Thompson, said he had been holding out from upgrading his iPhone 3G for the launch of Apple’s new device. Although none of the new model’s features surprised him, he said he would nonetheless upgrade when the new phone arrives in store.

“It’s Apple — of course I’m excited to get [the new phone],” he said. “And the new Apple Store just makes it a piece of cake for repairs.”

The Apple Store is open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday.
