THE NEWS

  • Burglaries on and around Yale’s campus more than halved between 2009 and 2010, an annual crime report released Thursday revealed. The report, which Yale submitted to the federal Department of Education in compliance with the federal Jeanne Clery Act, also shows a rise in arrests for alcohol and drug violations. But while 2010 saw a spike in disciplinary action by the University in drug-related cases, administrators disciplined fewer students for alcohol-related infringements.
  • After decades of dominating Yale’s nightlife, Toad’s Place might have some new competition. Box 63, an American bar and grill on the corner of Park and Elm streets, opened this June and, since then, has seen a growing number of late-night regulars. While representatives for Box 63 said they did not believe they were taking business from Toad’s, many Yalies said they see Box 63’s atmosphere as an alternative to the popular night club. Seven of nine Yale students interviewed said they appreciated Box 63’s milder, Yale-only setting compared to Toad’s louder, more crowded parties.
  • Library staff knew Yalewould bring a new University Librarian to campus this academic year, but some were surprised to find their own roles in the library changed. For the first time in over ten years, the library is undergoing a major reorganization of personnel in an effort to centralize library services.
