Great big crowd. About 300 people showed up for the first session of “Great Big Ideas” Wednesday, the experimental seminar co-taught by Provost Peter Salovey. It is meant for 18 students. Salovey announced that the class was designed for freshmen and sophomores, at which point juniors and seniors left, thinning the herd.
And if you like crowds, head to Paul Bloom’s DeVane Lecture tomorrow at 4 p.m. As of Wednesday at 8 p.m. 629 people had signed up for it on Online Course Selection. The lecture from the popular psychology professor is called “Moralities of Everyday Life.”
Not everything in the job market is bad news. According to the Toad’s campus-wide email Wednesday, positions are available: “Stop by the Toad’s Box office between 11am and 6pm and fill out an applic. [sic] Toad’s is hiring.”
Forget your troubles; come on, get happy. Yale was named the happiest and top brainiac college in a series of rankings put out by Newsweek and The Daily Beast. We were also deemed second horniest college and second best for future politicians.
We are not as high in the Washington Monthly’s ranking of schools based on their “contribution to the public good.” Yale comes in at 39th. “Is it laying the foundation for the kind of nation we want to become?” the introduction to the ranking asks of Yale.
A spokesperson for the Revolutionary Communist Party, USA, handed out flyers on Elm Street around noon Wednesday. “You can’t change the world if you don’t know the BAsics,” the flyers read. “There would be no United States as we know it today without slavery. That is a simple and basic truth.”
For the Science Hill-bound: The new KBT Café in the lobby of Kline Biology Tower is having its grand opening today. The cafe is open from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
