THE NEWS

  • When the United States credit rating was downgraded this August, Yale kept its top-notch AAA status — but the latest bout of national economic turbulence still threatens to plunge the University into tricky financial straits. Though the government’s near-default this summer drew comparisons to the economic turmoil of 2008, the two crises will likely play out differently for Yale.
  • The University announced in June that the works of Henry Kissinger,national security adviser and secretary of state to Presidents Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford, would lay the foundation for the new Johnson Center for the Study of American Diplomacy, housed in the Institute. Before an evening ceremony at the Greenberg Conference Center, Kissinger led an hour-long seminar Wednesday with students from Grand Strategy, the presence of the program President Richard Levin said influenced Kissinger’s choice to donate his papers to Yale.
  • The opening of the Elm City Market has been delayed again, leaving Yalies returning to the Elm City another grocer option. Although difficulties in securing funding initially pushed back the opening of the food co-op located on the ground floor of 360 State St. from March to late summer, lease negotiations and minor construction delays have moved the opening to late October, general manager Mark Regni said in an email to the News on Sunday.
